L\u2019historien des<br \/>\nid\u00e9es consacre \u00e0 Goya, dont on<br \/>\nle sent tr\u00e8s proche, une biographie<br \/>\nintellectuelle qui entrem\u00eale<br \/>\n\u00e9pisodes personnels et analyses<br \/>\npicturales. Sans expliquer<br \/>\nson oeuvre ni par ses accidents<br \/>\nde sant\u00e9, ni par sa rupture sentimentale, ni m\u00eame par l\u2019irruption de<br \/>\nla \u00ab guerre sanglante \u00bb, il montre la mani\u00e8re dont son univers se nourrit<br \/>\ndes m\u00e9ditations que ces \u00e9v\u00e9nements ont suscit\u00e9es en lui. Car<br \/>\nFrancisco de Goya exprime sa vie int\u00e9rieure, ses d\u00e9mons et ses fantasmes,<br \/>\npla\u00e7ant l\u2019invisible au-dessus du visible. Cet essai exprime<br \/>\nune fascination pour celui qui a boulevers\u00e9 les mani\u00e8res de peindre,<br \/>\nau point qu\u2019il \u00ab <em>semble avoir concentr\u00e9 dans sa propre existence<br \/>\nun mouvement qui, aux dires des philosophes, a pris des si\u00e8cles<\/em> \u00bb.<br \/>\nMouvement de l\u2019esprit, d\u00e9crit par Hegel, qui \u00ab <em>se retire du dehors<br \/>\npour rentrer en lui-m\u00eame<\/em> \u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Les monstres de Goya habitent la r\u00e9alit\u00e9, la raison c\u00f4toie la folie,<br \/>\nl\u2019inconscient collabore avec le r\u00e9fl\u00e9chi. L\u2019auteur a choisi de revisiter<br \/>\ndans toute sa complexit\u00e9 le rapport que ce peintre entretient avec<br \/>\nles Lumi\u00e8res fran\u00e7aises. R\u00e9pondant \u00e0 ceux qui ont cru voir en lui un<br \/>\nrepr\u00e9sentant de ce courant, il montre qu\u2019au contraire de ses amis<br \/>\n\u00ab \u00e9clair\u00e9s \u00bb, il savait impossible l\u2019\u00e9limination des passions. Point de<br \/>\nverve \u00e9ducatrice, de ton professoral, de condamnation de l\u2019obscurantisme.<br \/>\nSous la satire de surface, la certitude plus subversive que<br \/>\n\u00ab<em> la raison ne r\u00e8gne pas en ma\u00eetre dans le chaos de l\u2019esprit, l\u2019ordre y<br \/>\nest contamin\u00e9 par le chaos <\/em> \u00bb. Il n\u2019est pas anodin que Todorov se soit<br \/>\nint\u00e9ress\u00e9 \u00e0 cet \u00ab humaniste dot\u00e9 d\u2019une conscience tragique \u00bb.
